تمّ تصنيف فصائل الدم إلى بعض الأنواع تبعاً لنظامٍ تمّ استحداثه في جامعة فيينا على يد العالم "كارل لاندشتاينرو" عام 1900م والذي حاز على جائزة نوبل لاكتشافه هذا الأمر ، ويقوم هذا النظام على مبدأ تقسيم دم الإنسان إلى الفصائل (A , B , AB , O) ، وبناءً على ذلك فإنّ دم الإنسان لا بدّ أن ينتمي لواحدة من تلك الفصائل ، كما أشار "لاندشتاينرو" إلى أنّ تقسيم الدم يعتمد على ما يُسّمى بالعامل الرايزيسي والذي يعد مولد الضدّ الخاص بالدم نفسه ، وهذا العامل قد يكون موجباً أو سالباً فقط ، حيث لا يمكن أن يكون موجباً وسالباً في الوقت نفسه
